While simple on paper, the combat mechanics forces you to read the combat text carefully (which updates dynamically) to determine which stance your enemy will adopt next and prevents you for choosing the most powerful attacks all the time. If he had attack with 9 instead, he would take 3 points of damage. However if you attack with 10 attack power and your opponent attacks with 5, he would take 2 points of damage. So if you charge at your opponent with 10 attack power, and he defends with 0 attack power, he takes 1 point of Stamina damage. Here's the twist - the damage the loser suffers is only dependent on his own attack power. The winner lands a hit and the loser takes damage. To determine who wins in a round, you compare attack power. Each round you recover some spent attack power. You choose your attacking power on a slider, with 0 being "full defence" and the maximum (which changes depending on your equipment) being an all-out attack. You can still perish from making a really bad choice.Ĭombat is totally revamped and I consider it to be a highlight of the game. There don't seem to be any random dice rolling in the text - no roll or die situation. Only Stamina remains, both Skill and Luck has gone. Fighting Fantasy gamebooks have three core stats - Skill, Stamina and Luck. It does have some impact on the plot in the later books - however, it's just a small impact. The hero now prays to an animal guide instead of Libra, the Goddess of Justice in the Fighting Fantasy pantheon. However, there is a small change in the lore. There may be new areas or content added to the iOS game too as some of the unofficial solutions map doesn't have the path I took in the game.

The gameplay mechanics have been totally overhauled (see below), otherwise I don't think there is much change to the text or flow of the game. Inkle's Sorcery! is a game for the iPhone and iPad. What makes this series stands out from its sibling Fighting Fantasy books and those of other series is arguably it's spellcasting system. It also looks elegant and beautiful to boot.įor those who needs an introduction, Steve Jackson's Sorcery is a Fighting Fantasy gamebook written during the heydays of the gamebook boom. There are new mechanics, features and new ways of enjoying the game.
